Zorro is getting a darker three-issue ride. Alien Books, partnering with Zorro Productions, will publish Zorro: Blood of the Past from novelist and comics writer Alex Segura and artist Goran Sudžuka starting in May 2027 (release date subject to confirmation), Comics Beat reports with exclusive preview art.
The first issue drops Don Diego de la Vega into grisly murders rocking the pueblo of Los Angeles, a spectre from his own past, and a new player hunting the man under the mask. Segura said the story “brings Zorro to his knees” against a villain who knows his secrets and where they come from. Sudžuka, citing Alex Toth’s Zorro as a north star, said the collaboration finally lined up after years of near-misses.
Before the miniseries, Alien ships Zorror Annual #1 on Dec. 16, 2026. The 48-page special leads with a 24-page story by Rodolfo Santullo with art by Matías Bergara and Magenta King — a stagecoach massacre race across the California desert — plus a classic short and covers by Gianenrico Bonacorsi and Fico Ossio, including a foil edition.
Alien also has a Kickstarter running for Blood of the Past, and ashcan material already hit NYCC ’26. Segura’s résumé spans Star Wars and Daredevil: Enemy of My Enemy; Sudžuka’s includes Y: The Last Man and Hellblazer.
Heritage pulp heroes keep finding indie publishers willing to fund atmospheric revisits, the same anniversary-and-revival energy that has propped up European icons like Dylan Dog’s 40th anniversary slate. Alien’s bet is that Zorro still cuts when the mystery is personal and the art remembers Toth.
May 2027 is still a ways out, but the December annual gives shops a nearer on-ramp. Between Kickstarter backers and the All-In-style direct market, Blood of the Past is Alien’s clearest signal yet that the Fox is a priority line, not a one-off license flex.
